Piles (Haemorrhoids)- causes and remedies

Piles, or haemorrhoids, are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus that can cause discomfort, itching, and bleeding. This condition is often the result of straining during bowel movements, prolonged sitting, or a low-fibre diet. In Ayurvedic practice, piles are linked to an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha doshas, which can disrupt normal bowel function and lead to the accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the digestive system.

Common causes*

  • Straining during bowel movements: Excessive straining, often due to constipation, increases pressure on the veins in the rectal area.
  • Low-fibre diet: Insufficient fibre intake can lead to hard stools and constipation, exacerbating the condition.
  • Prolonged sitting or sedentary lifestyle: Extended periods of sitting, especially on hard surfaces, may contribute to increased pressure in the anal region.
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and increased abdominal pressure during pregnancy can lead to the development of haemorrhoids.
  • Obesity: Excess weight adds pressure to the pelvic veins, making piles more likely to occur.

Home remedies*

Try these simple and effective remedies to get rid of or control Piles:

Sitz bath

Soak in a warm sitz bath for 10–15 minutes several times a day. This practice helps to relieve pain and reduce inflammation by improving blood circulation in the affected area.

Aloe vera application

Apply fresh aloe vera gel directly to the affected area to soothe irritation and reduce inflammation. Aloe vera’s cooling properties can provide significant relief from discomfort.

Cold compress

Use a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a soft cloth on the external haemorrhoids to reduce swelling and numb pain.

Fibre-rich diet

Increase your intake of high-fibre foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. This helps soften stools and promotes regular bowel movements, reducing the need to strain.

Triphala powder supplement

Take a teaspoon of Triphala powder mixed in warm water before bedtime. Triphala supports healthy digestion, promotes regular bowel movements, and aids in detoxifying the system, which may help alleviate the strain that worsens piles.

Hydration

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep the body hydrated and support healthy digestion, thereby preventing constipation.
