Persistent cough- causes and remedies

A persistent cough can be more than just an irritating symptom—it may be an indication of an underlying respiratory issue or an imbalance in the body's natural systems. Chronic coughing disrupts daily activities, disturbs sleep, and can lead to throat irritation. In Ayurvedic medicine, a persistent cough is often linked to an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, which may be aggravated by factors such as environmental pollutants, dietary habits, or seasonal changes.

Common causes*

  • Post-nasal drip: Excess mucus from the nasal passages can drip down the throat, triggering a continuous cough
  • Respiratory infections: Conditions such as bronchitis, pneumonia, or prolonged viral infections can result in a chronic cough
  • Asthma and allergies: Inflammatory conditions like asthma or allergic reactions to dust, pollen, or other irritants can lead to persistent coughing spells
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and trigger a cough reflex
  • Environmental irritants: Exposure to smoke, pollutants, or strong chemical odours can cause ongoing irritation of the respiratory tract

Home remedies*

Try these simple and effective remedies to relieve persistent cough:

Oregano oil gargle

Dilute one to two drops of oregano oil in a glass of warm water and use it as a gargle. This remedy can help reduce throat inflammation and fight off infections; however, it should be used sparingly and with caution.

Licorice root infusion

Brew licorice root in boiling water to create a mild tea. Licorice has natural demulcent properties that help coat and soothe the throat, potentially alleviating cough symptoms.

Warm salt water gargle

Gargle with a mixture of warm water and a pinch of salt several times a day. This simple remedy can help clear mucus and reduce throat inflammation.

Thyme-lemon honey drink

Steep a teaspoon of dried thyme in hot water for a few minutes, then mix in fresh lemon juice and honey. Thyme's antimicrobial properties, combined with the soothing effects of lemon and honey, may help relieve a persistent cough.

Thyme infusion

Steep a teaspoon of dried thyme in boiling water for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and add a dash of honey. Thyme’s natural compounds may help relax the respiratory muscles and combat minor infections that contribute to a persistent cough.
